Xplorer2-Tabbed Windows File Explorer

Let’s face it: for advanced file manipulation, Windows File Explorer stinks. But like Firefox is a must-have replacement for Internet Explorer, a file manager called Xplorer2 blows Windows Explorer out of the water for anyone who browses multiple folders, copies, pastes, moves and searches the PC filesystem frequently.

Using Xplorer2’s tabbed, dual pane interface, keyboard shortcuts and killer advanced features, you’re in total control of your PC’s files. Let’s take a look.

Kita sudah tidak asing dengan browser2 alternatif, seperti Firefox, Opera, K-Meleon, dll. Semuanya memiliki Tab. Jadi tidak perlu membuka window baru untuk membuka halaman baru. Dan akhirnya ditiru oleh Internet Explorer 7. Itu masalah browser internet, lalu bagaimana dengan Windows Explorer untuk membuka File? Sering kali kita membuka banyak window untuk melihat banyak folder yang berbeda. Itulah kelemahan Windows Explorer. Jika di Linux, dengan konqueror, hal ini bisa dilakukan dengan mudah. Namun sayangnya Windows Explorer tidak bisa, bahkan pada versi Vistapun belum mendukung itu.

Xplorer2 adalah alternatifnya. Xplorer2 bisa menggantikan Windows Explorer anda yang minim fungsi. Dengan Xplorer2 anda bisa menghemat tempat, tidak perlu lagi membuka banyak Window untuk melihat berbagai folder sekaligus.

Download and install Xplorer2

The “lite” version of Xplorer2 has a few features disabled, but it’s far from limited; it’s free for personal or academic use. A license for the pro version costs a reasonable $30, and there’s a full 30-day trial to check out pro features. For the purposes of this article, we’ll stick to the free Xplorer Lite (where locked “pro” features are denoted by a “[P]” in the menus.)

Triple threat interface (Multi Window)

First thing you’ll notice off the bat is that Xplorer2 displays file listings from two folders at once in one window. This makes a lot of sense, since a lot of the time you’re copy or moving files between folders. Also, in the far left pane, there’s an easy-to-navigate directory tree of your computer, as shown (click to enlarge).

To quickly switch between the two open folder panes, hit the Tab key. The active pane will have a white background, the inactive will be in beige. To turn on or off the directory tree pane, from the View menu, check or uncheck “Show Tree.”

Biasanya anda membuka satu folder, mengcopy filenya, lalu pindah ke folder lain untuk mempastenya. Dengan Xplore2, tidak perlu lagi repot2 seperti itu. Karena Xplorer2 memiliki Dual Window (pane) yang terbuka, sehingga copy paste akan jauh lebih mudah. Dengan multi Window tidak perlu repot2 pindah folder atau membuka banyak window sekaligus. Selain itu juga ada treenya disebelah kiri, jadi sama seperti windows explorer, kita bisa membuka file lewat tree tersebut. Untuk menutup atau membuka tree, tekan Ctrl+T pada keyboard.

Tabbed Exploring (Multi Tab)

If the dual pane view wasn’t enough, you can also open up sets of folders you work with frequently in tabs. From the File menu, choose “New Tab” or simply hit Ctrl+Ins to open a new tab. Move between tabs with your keyboard with Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right arrow.

You can even rename a tab for easy visual reference. Just right-click on it and choose rename.

Kalau Multi Window (dual panes), masih anda anggap kurang. Anda bisa membuka folder2 lainnya di Tab baru. Dengan mengklik Ctrl+Ins untuk membuka Tab baru. Kalau ingin mengubah nama folder lewat tab juga bisa, tinggal klik-kanan lalu pilih rename.

Filter your files

Xplorer2 makes it dead easy to work with sets of files. You can use a filter to select all the files that start with G or end in .png. Simply type your filter into Xplorer2’s address bar (like “*.txt”) or from the Mark menu, choose “Select Group.” From there you can copy, move or otherwise manipulate the set of files.

Xplorer2 juga bisa membuat filter. Jadi anda bisa menentukan jenis file apa yang ingin anda tampilkan di window. Apakah file gambar saja, atau video saja, atau mungkin audio saja. Atau mungkin ingin menampilkan format tertentu saja seperti .txt, .jpg, .doc, dll. Jadi semuanya dapat anda atur dengan mudah dengan mengklik tombol auto filter di bar bagian atas. Atau untuk pengaturan lebih jauh lagi bisa dengan group. Pilih mark, select group…

Ini dapat mempermudah anda mencari file.

Keyboard shortcuts

Xplorer2 has a very extensive set of mature keyboard shortcuts. First, it’s got incremental search and select for a directory listing. Just type the first few letters of a file or folder name and Xplorer2 will instantly move down and select it in the list. Hold down the shift key to do incremental search by file extension (like Shift+tx will take you to the first .txt file in the list.)

To copy files between open folders, use F5. To navigate to a particular drive letter, use Ctrl+Shift+Letter (like Ctrl+Shift+C) to go the drive’s root.

Xplorer2 juga memiliki shortcut keyboard. Dan hebatnya kita bisa mengganti shortcut keyboard jika tidak sesuai dengan keinginan kita. Misalnya New Tab biasanya kalau di browser Firefox kan Ctrl+T, tapi di Xplorer2 Ctrl+Ins, ini sangat menyusahkan karena tombol insert berada di kanan atas. Anda bisa menggantinya di Customize>Keyboard…

Split and merge files

If you’ve got a multi-gigabyte file – like a video or disk image – you want to transport on a series of smaller capacity CD-R’s or thumb drives, Xplorer2 can split the file into small parts and reassemble them later. To do so, from the Actions menu choose “Split” and select the file part sizes. To put the file back together, select all the parts (make sure they’re sorted by name so they’re in the right join order!) and from the Actions menu, choose Join.

Jika anda memiliki file yang besar dapat di jadikan beberapa file kecil sesuai kebutuhan anda. Jadi misalnya besar file 1 GB, dan anda ingin memasukkan ke dua CD, maka dapat anda bagi filenya jadi dua. Lalu setelah dipisah, anda juga bisa menggabungkannya lagi dengan Xplorer2.

Skin

Everyone including you can contribute new toolbar icons for the various commands. All you need is a graphics editor to change the default bitmaps and some good taste – it can’t be hard to beat mine hastily cobbled together over time! I know there are people that have edited the program resources to change the icons; now is your chance to come forward and share your creativity with the rest of us!

Untuk tampilannya memang terkesan kaku. Tapi jangan khawatir, karena saat ini sedang dikembangkan skinnya. Sehingga tampialnnya suatu saat bisa lebih menarik.

File Search

You can browse and search files contained inside ZIP and RAR files. This is a powerful feature in an offline database, because you don’t have to guess the contents of a zip file from its name and size: you can drill right down and see what’s inside!

Anda tidak lagi memerlukan software tambahan seperti Google Desktop ataupun Copernic Desktop. Xplorer2 sudah menyediakan Search content, jadi anda bisa mencari “kata-kata” yang berada di dalam file pada folder yang anda inginkan. Bahkan anda dapat mencari kata-kata dalam file yang dikompres seperti zip. Sangat mudah dan cepat. Ctrl+F

Alternatives to Xplorer2

Finally, Xplorer2 might not be everyone’s cup of tea. We also recommended UltraExplorer, TotalCommander and CubicExplorer for replacing Windows Explorer.

Setiap orang memiliki selera yang berbeda-beda. Anda bisa juga menggunakan alternatif lainnya seperti UltraExplorer, TotalCommander, CubicExplorer, Tubo Navigator, dan Pablo Commander untuk menggantikan Windows Explorer. Aatu yg berbayar PowerDesk.
